DEAR FRIEND OF BROCKTON FIREFIGHTERS,
Brockton has long been known as the “City of Champions”, due to its rich sports history in both professional and high school sports. The official definition of “champion” is defined as warrior, or fighter; a militant advocate or defender; a winner; a high-level competitor; or a person who fights for another or for a cause; defender; protector; supporter. On May 10, 2008, Brockton will pay tribute to another set of champions – Brockton firefighters.
The Strand Theatre Firefighters Memorial Monument will honor the 13 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on March 10, 1941, in a devastating fire that still ranks as the third largest loss of firefighters in a structure fire in our nation’s history. Located on City Hall Plaza, the Memorial will be a daily reminder of these brave souls but also of all Brockton firefighters who continually answer the call and protect the children, seniors, families and businesses of this City.
As a community leader, you have the opportunity to support Brockton firefighters in building this Memorial. We are eighty percent of the way to our goal of $175,000 to pay for the building and construction of the Memorial. With your help we will reach our goal. All sponsorships pledged before March 1st will be publicly announced in all publicity efforts surrounding the 67th Annual Strand Remembrance Breakfast on March 10th. Sponsors will also play a pivotal role in the official unveiling and dedication ceremony on Saturday, May 10th.
Statistics show that firefighters have the most dangerous profession in the country, and a June 2007 CNN opinion poll ranked firefighters as the most trusted individuals in the country. This Memorial will stand tall to the courage and heroism of firefighters.
As a community member, your support will send a strong message to your colleagues and the general public of your support of firefighters. We hope that you will review the supporting materials and consider joining us in our mission to honor our fallen heroes. We look forward to working with you on this momentous, and long overdue, project!
Sincerely,
Strand Theatre Firefighters Memorial Monument Committee
FACTSHEET
UNVEILING & DEDICATION CEREMONY
On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the Strand Theatre Firefighters Memorial Monument will be unveiled in a dedication ceremony at City Hall. The Memorial will honor the 13 Brockton firefighters who lost their lives in 1941 in a fitting tribute to the fallen heroes. Located in City Hall Plaza and yards from the original Strand Theatre, the Memorial will serve as a daily reminder to residents and visitors of the ultimate sacrifice these firefighters made, but also the role that all firefighters play in helping to protect the community. Families, firefighters, city officials and the general public will be invited to this day of remembrance and honor. The Saturday afternoon event will include a VIP reception prior to the start of the ceremony, musical performances by the Brockton and area Pipes & Drums, Honor Guards, a formal speaking program, and the official unveiling of the Statue.
BRIEF HISTORY
The Strand Theatre Fire took place March 10, 1941 in downtown Brockton. The Theatre was located on School Street between Main Street and City Hall. 13 firefighters lost their lives and 20 firefighters were injured in what was first thought to be a routine fire but quickly became a disaster when a section of the roof collapsed into the balcony level. Nearly 67 years later, the Strand Theatre Fire is still the third largest loss of life to firefighters from a burning building collapse along with Philadelphia’s leather factory fire in 1910. Chief (Ret.) Ed Burrell is the last remaining surviving firefighter from the Strand Theatre. Every year on March 10th, a remembrance ceremony is held at City Hall to honor the fallen heroes.
ABOUT THE STATUE
The Memorial will feature a 10 ½" foot tall bronze and granite statue of a sole firefighter in a uniform representative of those worn in the 1940s. The front of the statue will list the names of the 13 fallen heroes. The Strand Theatre Firefighters Memorial Monument Committee has commissioned Skylight Studios, Inc., of Woburn, MA, for this project. President Robert Shure has designed such notable statues as the Korean War Memorial at the Charlestown Navy Yard, the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the State House and the Boston Police Officers Memorial at Boston Police Headquarters. Skylight Studios designs, crates and fabricates monuments and memorials worldwide. All of their work is site specific and commemorates historic people, events, veterans, and public servants.
COST
The entire cost for the Memorial is $150,000, of which $120,000 has already been raised through private and corporate donations. In addition in-kind services, such as landscaping, bricks and mortar, site work and labor totaling more than $25,000 has been donated through local companies and the Brockton Firefighters Local 144.

Sponsorship levels up to $25,000 are still available to help fund the Memorial. For more information please contact George Phillips or Richard Baker at 508-583-2323 or through the Brockton Firefighters website: www.Brocktonfirelocal144.org .
